I must perhaps re-phrase. It should read "Best 2.1 Speakers in India considering QOS and VFM". I write this as I listen to the the set. A little known company called F&D (Also spoken as 'Fenda') is making waves in the Indian sound scene with their offerings. Read on past the break to see why I think their A520 offering is the best bang for your buck and what exactly it is that makes it tick.
Like many, I've owned a lot of 2.1 speaker sets. While most of them were by Creative, I jumped onto Altec Lansings when an inventory listing went terribly wrong at the Metro supermarket and I ended up owning a set of VS4121 for just 1500 Rupees. I have, as expected also heard a lot of other brands owned by others.
Any problems with the regular 2.1 offerings can be classified into two buckets. A completely abysmal mid-range(vocals, strings), or a lack of quality base(thumps). Altec Lansings lacked mid-range. Everything was boomy and chilly, and every song lacked a soul. I often ended up tweaking the equalizer for each song. It was annoying. I am an audiophile. I've been looking for a replacement for a very long time.
I ran into F&D A520 at a blog and the reviewer was all praise. One blog states clear vocals, thumping good bass and another said it sounded better than a Creative T3. I picked the set up. At 2000/- Rupees apx, it was a risk I was willing to take.
I am blown away. I wish to find better words. I am ecstatic. You simply cannot go wrong with them. To see their real prowess, test them on Windows media player's TruBass and WOW effects. The thumps are concise, the vocals sound beautiful and the chills are all around. Any genre sounds great.
All I can say is this. Pick them up and you won't be disappointed and its taken me well past the agony of the Altec Lansings. The satellites don't really look too classy, but that's not what an audiophile wants. When I close my eyes and listen, it at times reminds me of a set of borrowed BOSE satellites I had for about a year.
I've also read from a reviewer that the set is great for music but doesn't deliver for movies. I find it hard to believe. All we care in audio is that all the audio frequencies we wish to hear are delivered well and if a speaker system can do that for a much broader audio like music, it must do well for movies too. And it did. I've watched Shawshank Redemption, V For Vendetta and Behind Enemy Lines again since I've picked them up and I can't complain. Not one bit.
The speaker is available online in a range of 1900/- to 2600/- Rupees. SP Road in Bangalore may give you a better deal, but you could avoid all the hassle.
Flipkart is now selling them for 1980/-.
